The Yankees face a much needed victory on Sunday. That may be tough, Johan Santana is the listed starter. They can’t afford to lose 2 of 3 to the oft-injured and struggling New York Mets. Yankees, more than any other team in the majors, feed off momentum because of the pressure, and they are the only team that play must win games before the All-Star break.
Fernando Nieve of the New York Mets used apparently the perfect amount of HGH to transform and elevate his entire pitching profile. Nieve shut down one of the more potent offenses in baseball. One, we don’t remember him being that big when he pitched for the Salem Avalanche a few years ago, class A affiliate of the Astros. And two, he wasn’t throwing 95, painting the corners, with a snap on his sharply breaking slider. More power to him. Tell us what brand you are using good sir, we would love to have some.
Cubs lose again, 2-0. Coming into this series the Twins were 9-21 on the road before winning the first two at Wrigley. The Cubs were obviously the perfect formula. Just try to structure a deal for Juan Pierre already Chicago NL. Don’t even think about it, make a deal and work out the logistics later. The Dodgers will be happy to oblige once Manny gets back. Torre would love to get a chance for another Cubs sweep in the playoffs. Currently, the Cubs are tied for 10th in OBP (.326), 13th in Runs scored (250), and 13th in SB (25).
Torii Hunter hit 3 Solo HRs in a 9-1 victory over the Padres [FanHouse]. We feel about Torii Hunter the way we feel about Chauncey Billups. Both are vastly underrated, and if you’ve seen Torii Hunter play live, he stands out as being the best player on the field. Even now at the age of 34, Hunter remains as charismatic as he was 10 years ago. In a few years, Hunter’s career numbers will start to round into form, 2000 hits, 300 HRs, to go along with 8 GGs and counting. He should be a perennial All-star, without question the best CFer in the AL this year, and arguably the entire league. Unfortunately, fan voting often gets in the way of one’s legacy. Case and point, this year, Josh Hamilton, by a wide margin, leads all AL CFers. Apparently he’s still a feel good story. We, the public, love and even idolize the man who overcame a crack-addiction, yet we vehemently denounce and condemn the man who uses, or is even suspected of using, HGH. Not even steroids, but the enigma of HGH. Which, as far as we can tell, is a miracle drug, the fountain of youth as some call it. The irony is so overwhelming you can’t even sense your own humanity. We understand he’s been deemed “The Natural.” He has immense talent and quite honestly the crack of the ball hitting his bat makes a different, more euphoric sound, especially for the deeply-rooted, passionate baseball fan. But he jas missed half the season this year, and when he has played has been mediocre or less. Our Torii Hunter for All-Star starting CFer campaign starting… NOW!!!
Only a matter of time before the battered Angels get healthy and find a groove. Vladimir’s BA is quietly starting to increase, and they got a very encouraging start from Joe Saunders.
Dontrelle Willis pitches Sunday vs the Pirates. Again, our human intuition says he finds some form of the pitcher’s “Nirvana”, relatively speaking. Though he may settle for oblivion after putting up a 2.19 WHIP in his previous 3 starts. Pirates are hitting .208 vs LHP last 10 games. Willis’ opponent, Ohlendorf, not much better, 2.02 WHIP last 3. What is O/U for that game? BBL
